By the time they’d stitched James back up, Alexander had already been transferred up stairs to the special care baby unit. Tabi had insisted that there was nothing wrong with him except that he was small, he would have to stay in the hospital for at least five weeks but if everything went well they should be able to take him home in the middle of July. James himself would probably have to spend a few days in a private room on the post natal wards after which he’d be discharged and sent home. At the thought of leaving his baby behind, James wanted to cry, he’d been told before hand that the baby would have to remain here until it was bigger but now he’d seen his son he didn’t want to let him out of his sight. Understanding his pain, Tabi explained to both of them that they would be able to spend loads of time here with Alexander, they’d be expected to come in and help care for their baby, no one would refuse them access to their child.
While the medical team did their final checks on James, Tabi suggested that Danny went out and broke the news to all of the people gathered in the waiting room, the crowd had grown since he’d left. Pushing him towards the door, she handed him a slip of paper; written down on it was the baby’s name, his birth weight and the exact time of his birth. Giving her a grateful smile, Danny stripped of the surgical clothing before making his way back out to the waiting room.
Opening the door, he gasped, the crowd had definitely grown, he could see James’ parents and siblings, Matt had arrived as had the rest of Mcfly. Looking up, Maria got to her feet, her movement making everyone turn and look at Danny, reaching him, Maria silently asked him the question on everyone’s lips. Unable to stop himself, Danny grinned before announcing that he was now a dad, James had given birth to a boy. Emitting a squeal, Maria lifted her hands to her face, tears starting to fall as the news sunk in, she was now a grandmother. The tableau that had formed at his appearance broke, and he was suddenly surrounded by friends and family, all of them congratulating him on the news. It was Mel who asked what the baby’s name was and Fletch who asked how heavy it was, the name was easily answered - Alexander. The other question was made much easier to answer due to Tabi’s bit of paper, Alex had weighed in at two pounds and fifteen ounces, a respectable size for his age. And before anyone asked he’d been delivered at nine, fifty-three pm.
Wishing his own parents were there as well, Danny asked in anyone had a phone or some change for a phone, he wanted to tell his mum as well, once he’d done that then Fletch could go and announce the baby’s arrival to the world. A phone was suddenly pushed into his hand, turning to thank the person he was stunned to see two new arrivals. His mum and dad.
Ten minutes later Tabi reappeared to tell Danny that they were ready to transfer James back up to the wards. Seeing all of the people there she suggested that maybe the parents could make their way up to the ward now, they could see James for a few minutes up there, and then she’d take them along to the baby unit to get their first glimpse of their grandchild. Everyone else would have to wait, they could come back and see James over the next couple of days. Tonight he needed to get some sleep. Then she led Danny back through the doors to where James was waiting to be taken upstairs.
